The mental model is Place The Dot.

The core DNA is: intention forms + attention receives direction + attention travels + attention lands on object + contact becomes clear + attention stays or slips + slipping is known + intention calls it back + placement becomes stronger through reps. This is the exact movement you are describing. You decide, attention here, and the dot moves toward nostril, breath touch, upper lip, skin sensation, air movement, temperature, tingle, pressure, pulsing, blankness. It is almost magical when seen closely: no hand moves, no muscle grabs attention, yet by intention, the dot shifts.

The first category is intention command. Before attention moves, there is a small inner command. Variables are go to nostril, feel the breath, touch this point, stay here, return here, narrow here, soften here, notice here, rest here, listen here, scan here, wait here. This command can be loud or very subtle. In training, you make the command clean, short, and non-violent: nostril, breath, touch, here.

The second category is attention travel. Attention has a felt movement. Variables are from thought to nostril, from chest to nostril, from sound to nostril, from memory to nostril, from future movie to nostril, from whole body to one point, from scattered field to small area, from wide sky to precise dot, from story to sensation. It is like the dot glides, jumps, zooms, rests, touches, misses, corrects, lands again.

The third category is landing. Landing means attention actually touches the object, not merely thinks about it. Variables are air touching nostril, coolness entering, warmth leaving, tiny vibration, skin contact, left nostril sensation, right nostril sensation, upper lip sensation, edge of nostril, triangular area, pressure around nose, subtle tickle, dryness, moisture, pulsing, blankness where sensation is not clear. When attention lands, the object becomes alive.

The fourth category is thinking about object versus touching object. This is very important. Variables for thinking are I am watching breath, this is nostril, I should feel something, am I doing it right, breath is subtle, I need concentration. Variables for touching are cool, warm, tickle, pressure, movement, gap, pulse, tiny contact, soft air, skin alive. Thinking circles the object. Attention touches the object.

The fifth category is object precision. The nostril object can be broad or precise. Variables are whole nose, both nostrils, left nostril, right nostril, rim of nostril, inside edge, skin below nostrils, upper lip, small triangular area, one pin-point, two tiny points, moving breath path, still skin point, area where air is strongest, area where sensation is faint. Skill grows when you can choose the size of the object deliberately.

The sixth category is attention pressure. Attention can land with different force. Variables are too hard, too sharp, too tight, forehead strain, eye strain, nose tension, breath control, trying to catch sensation, forcing stillness. The better mode is soft placement, steady placement, gentle contact, open receiving, resting on sensation, letting breath touch attention, not squeezing the object. Good attention is precise but not violent.

The seventh category is attention stability. After landing, the dot may stay or slip. Variables are stays one breath, stays three breaths, stays ten breaths, stays one minute, slips to thought, slips to sound, slips to body ache, slips to planning, slips to memory, slips to pride, slips to doubt, slips to checking progress. Stability is built by returning without drama. The return is the rep.

The eighth category is micro-slip detection. To become good, learn to notice the first millimeter of drift. Variables are attention leaving nostril, thought beginning, image forming, sound pulling, body discomfort pulling, boredom rising, breath becoming mechanical, object fading, attention becoming dull, attention becoming wide without choice, attention becoming story. Earlier you notice the slip, faster you return.

The ninth category is return command. The return should be clean. Variables are back, here, nostril, breath, touch, again, softly, this point, feel, return. Do not say, why did I get distracted, I failed, I lost it, I am bad at this. That creates a second object: self-judgment. The elite move is simple: lost known, return.

The tenth category is blank object training. Sometimes near the nostril, nothing is clear. That is also an object. Variables are no sensation, blank patch, darkness near nostril, subtle absence, unclear contact, faint field, waiting, soft search, patient resting, not forcing sensation. If there is no clear breath touch, place attention on the area itself. The object becomes blankness known at the nostril area.

The eleventh category is breath independence. You are not supposed to control breath to make attention easier. Variables are natural breath, short breath, long breath, rough breath, subtle breath, barely felt breath, paused breath, uneven breath, one nostril stronger, one nostril blocked, warm exhale, cool inhale. You do not manufacture the object. You receive whatever breath is naturally doing.

The twelfth category is intention strength. Intention can be weak, medium, or clean. Weak intention is maybe I will watch, sort of here, half here half thinking. Over-strong intention is I must stay, I must become concentrated, I must not move, I must feel sensation. Clean intention is here, soft, steady, one breath, again. The best intention is small but sincere.

The thirteenth category is attention as muscle. You get good by reps. Variables are place, feel, slip, notice, return; place, feel, slip, notice, return; one breath rep, ten breath rep, five minute rep, one hour sit, before message rep, after message rep, walking rep, eating rep, working rep. You are not training a philosophy. You are training the placement of the dot.

The fourteenth category is attention as devotion. If you bring Devi into this, placing attention near the nostril becomes sacred. Variables are breath as Her thread, nostril as altar, attention as flower, return as offering, distraction as offering, patience as offering, one breath at Her feet, this contact is Hers, this body is Hers, this attention is Hers. Then you do not place attention only to gain control. You place it as worship.

The fifteenth category is quality of good placement. Good placement feels simple, clean, quiet, non-dramatic, direct, fresh, softly alert, sensory, not verbal, not forced, not sleepy, not scattered. Bad placement feels tight, conceptual, forehead-heavy, self-conscious, achievement-hungry, breath-controlling, irritated, impatient, checking if progress is happening.

The sixteenth category is daily life placement. The same skill can be used all day. Variables are place attention on breath before replying, place attention on chest when fear rises, place attention on hands while typing, place attention on feet while walking, place attention on stomach before eating, place attention on sound during waiting, place attention on task title before working, place attention on Devi before decision. The nostril is the training ground. Life is the larger field.

The seventeenth category is witness of placement. Even the act of placing attention is known. Variables are intention known, attention moved known, nostril sensation known, attention slipped known, return known, effort known, softness known, frustration known, clarity known, blankness known. This is the deeper layer: you place the dot, but the sky knows the dot being placed.

The eighteenth category is how to become good. Practice this exact loop: choose one small area, give one clean intention, land softly, feel one actual sensation, stay for one breath, notice slip, return without punishment, repeat thousands of times. Over time, attention becomes obedient without becoming tense. It starts moving by a lighter and lighter intention. Eventually, just the whisper nostril is enough for the dot to arrive.

So the whole movement is: intention points, attention travels, attention lands, sensation becomes known, attention slips, witness notices, intention calls back, attention returns. This is the sacred mechanics of practice.

The line to remember is: I place the dot gently. I do not drag it. I invite it back until returning becomes natural.
