The mental model is Arising To Interpretation.
The core DNA is: contact + body signal + felt tone + attention capture + recognition + memory matching + interpretation + self-reference + emotion + urge + witness knowing + choice. Something does not usually arise as a finished sentence first. It often begins as a body event, then becomes a felt tone, then attention gets pulled, then the mind names it, then the mind explains it, then the self-story says this means something about me, and then you feel good, bad, unsafe, wanted, small, powerful, rejected, hopeful, or lost.
Stage one is contact. Something touches the system. It can be an outer event like boss message, ad performance drop, someone praising another person, a junior telling you what to do, a girl looking at you, money number, dirty room, WhatsApp notification, AI output, client reply, silence from someone, body in mirror. It can also be an inner event like memory, image, future thought, fantasy, old embarrassment, desire, fear, comparison, sexual thought, spiritual memory, what if thought. Contact means something entered the field.
Stage two is raw body signal. Before the mind has a full explanation, the body may already move. Variables are chest tightening, stomach dropping, throat closing, jaw clenching, face heating, breath shortening, eyes sharpening, shoulders rising, belly hollowing, heart speeding, skin buzzing, hands becoming restless, spine collapsing, head pressure, solar plexus contraction, cold wave, hot wave, numb patch, heaviness, lightness, expansion, contraction. This is not yet a story. It is the body saying something has been registered.
Stage three is felt tone. This is very important. Before interpretation, there is often a basic flavor: pleasant, unpleasant, or neutral. Variables are sweet, sharp, heavy, exciting, threatening, warm, cold, open, closed, inviting, repelling, charged, dull, safe, unsafe, alive, dead, expansive, contractive. In Vipassana language, this is close to vedana: the basic tone of experience. The mind has not yet said the full sentence, but the system already knows: I like this, I do not like this, or I do not care.
Stage four is attention capture. Among thousands of things happening, one thing becomes bright. Variables are the boss's sentence becomes bright, the bad metric becomes bright, the memory becomes bright, the body ache becomes bright, the insult becomes bright, the desire becomes bright, the future fear becomes bright, the praise becomes bright. Why this one? Because the system marks it as relevant to safety, status, money, belonging, identity, sex, future, survival, love, control, freedom, self-worth. Attention does not go equally everywhere. It goes where the nervous system senses importance.
Stage five is recognition. The mind begins to name the thing. Variables are this is fear, this is shame, this is pressure, this is attraction, this is failure, this is disrespect, this is opportunity, this is danger, this is unfair, this is good, this is bad, this is about money, this is about my career, this is about my value, this is about my boss, this is about my future. Naming makes the arising more solid. A vague body signal becomes a thing.
Stage six is memory matching. The mind compares the present to old data. Variables are this feels like school embarrassment, this feels like being ignored, this feels like not being chosen, this feels like being poor, this feels like being powerless, this feels like past failure, this feels like praise I once wanted, this feels like old rejection, this feels like parental pressure, this feels like status loss, this feels like opportunity, this feels like victory. The mind is a pattern machine. It asks: where have I seen this before?
Stage seven is interpretation. This is the stage you named. The mind creates meaning. Variables are he does not respect me, I am not good enough, I will fail, I am behind, they think I am foolish, my career is not working, this ad is dead, this is a sign I am weak, this is proof I am improving, this means Devi is guiding me, this means I am attractive, this means I am losing control, this means I am safe, this means I am in danger. Interpretation is the mind turning sensation plus memory into a story.
The mind creates interpretation because its job is prediction. It wants to know what is happening, what does it mean, am I safe, am I winning, am I losing, what should I do next, who has power, what will happen if I ignore this, how do I protect myself, how do I get more of this, how do I avoid this. The mind cannot tolerate raw uncertainty for long, so it creates a map. Sometimes the map is accurate. Sometimes it is a panic drawing.
Stage eight is right or wrong interpretation. An interpretation becomes more right when it is close to the actual conditions: the ad CTR dropped, the landing page may need testing, the boss gave public feedback, the user is confused, the room is dirty, the body is tired, the offer is unclear. An interpretation becomes more wrong when it adds unnecessary identity drama: I am finished, everyone thinks I am a fool, I can never succeed, this proves I am worthless, my whole future is gone, Devi has abandoned me, nothing will work. The event may be real, but the mind's meaning may be inflated.
Stage nine is self-reference. This is where suffering becomes personal. Variables are this means I am small, this means I am not respected, this means I am not lovable, this means I am not powerful, this means I am behind, this means I am ugly, this means I am not chosen, this means I am not professional, this means I am failing as a revenue architect, this means my life is not working. The more the interpretation touches me, my value, my status, my future, the stronger the emotional charge.
Stage ten is emotion formation. Now the body and story merge. Variables are fear, anxiety, shame, anger, jealousy, hope, excitement, relief, pride, sadness, helplessness, longing, disgust, devotion, gratitude, love, lust, resentment, panic, confidence, collapse. Emotion is not just thought. It is interpretation plus body charge.
This is why you feel good or bad. If the interpretation says gain, safety, status up, love, control, progress, approval, belonging, the felt experience becomes pleasant: expansion, warmth, energy, lightness, hope, aliveness. If the interpretation says loss, danger, status down, rejection, uncertainty, powerlessness, future threat, identity wound, the felt experience becomes unpleasant: contraction, heaviness, heat, tightness, drop, ache, fear, shame.
Stage eleven is urge. Once the emotion forms, the system wants action. Variables are defend, explain, escape, scroll, eat, argue, prove yourself, seek validation, hide, attack, message someone, refresh metrics, ask AI, overthink, fix immediately, quit, control, confess, pray, offer, sit, breathe, work. The urge is the body-mind trying to complete the emotional loop.
Stage twelve is witness knowing. The witness comes to know the arising because the arising appears in awareness. It may appear first as sensation known, then feeling known, then thought known, then story known, then urge known. The witness does not need to create a story to know. It knows by direct contact: tightness is known, heat is known, fear is known, thought is known, image is known, resistance is known, urge is known. The mind says I am anxious. Witness says anxiety is being known.
Stage thirteen is mind noticing the witness. This is subtle. First, awareness already knows. Then the mind may say, oh, this has arisen. That sentence is useful because it creates distance. Variables are fear has arisen, shame has arisen, comparison has arisen, anger has arisen, future movie has arisen, body contraction has arisen, resistance has arisen, desire has arisen, old story has arisen. The moment you say this clearly, the experience is no longer completely fused as me. It becomes something appearing.
Stage fourteen is de-identification. This is where freedom starts. Variables are this is a sensation, this is a thought, this is an interpretation, this is old memory, this is body charge, this is fear trying to predict, this is shame trying to protect status, this is craving trying to escape, this is anger trying to regain control. The experience may still hurt, but it is not absolute. It becomes workable.
Stage fifteen is choice. Once witness is present, the next movement can be cleaner. Variables are feel sensation, watch breath, offer to Devi, delay reaction, ask what is true, separate fact from story, write the next task, send a calmer message, take one useful action, do not obey panic, do not obey shame, do not obey fantasy, return to body, return to task, return to offering. Choice does not mean emotion disappears. Choice means emotion is no longer the only driver.
So the full chain looks like this: contact happens, body reacts, felt tone appears, attention is captured, mind names it, memory matches it, mind interprets it, self-story personalizes it, emotion forms, urge arises, witness knows it, distance opens, choice becomes possible.
The line to remember is: The body feels first, the mind explains second, the self-story claims third, and the witness can know all of it.
